There are some separate tables for certain classes of words in the main grammar section of this site:
Some other such tables will be added in the near future:
  • short glossary of everyday computer terms
Here are some specialized Esperanto dictionaries on other sites of the World-Wide Web:
  • a short glossary of Esperanto words and phrases of a less-than-polite nature (caveat lector)
  • An extensive dictionary of computer terms and phrases

The beginning Esperanto student should learn all of the words in this glossary rather soon in his studies.  There are well under a thousand main entries, but they and their derivatives will be about 80% of the words that will occur in most Esperanto texts.

The entries have slashes (/) separating the roots and affixes, and are alphabetized by the part before the first slash.  If the word is at the left margin, it is the basic form of the word with the basic meaning.  Derivatives are listed immediately below it, slightly indented.

Definition Examples
aĉet/i (vt) to buy, purchase
aĉet/o (n) an act of purchasing
  aĉet/aĵ/o (n) a purchase (i.e., an item purchased)
This says that the root aĉet is basically a transitive verb, aĉeti, meaning “to purchase”.  the other meanings depend on that definition for their own meanings.  The noun, aĉeto, means “a purchase”, that is, the act of buying something.  The noun aĉetaĵo means “a purchase”, that is, a thing that is purchased.  Other words not listed, but formed regularly, would be the adjective aĉeta, meaning “relating to purchasing” and the adverb aĉete, meaning “by means of a purchase”.
See the explanation of grammar elsewhere on this site for more information on how words are converted to other parts of speech.
